The chocolate is made in the open kitchen by the window. The café runs all day. Most things on this list have been on the menu for years. Some are new. Some are old favourites we kept because people kept asking.

The popstar waffle & the Pop-Star Mocha

A chocolate waffle with popping candy and toffee crunch, and the drink it inspired. They’re a bit silly. They’re also the things people drive over from Whalley for.

  • The chocolate display case: trays of heart truffles, chocolate-coated marshmallows, and slabs topped with coloured buttons.

    Handmade chocolates

    Truffles, slabs, chocolate-coated marshmallows, the gift boxes for birthdays we keep being asked to do. Made fresh on site. You can usually see what’s being made through the window.

    Café food

    Paninis and sandwiches on proper bread, cakes from the counter, fine teas and barista coffee. The café side is what keeps the room full between waffle orders.

  • Hot chocolate, the way we make it

    Milk, dark, white. Pick a percentage. Add the toppings if you want them. Order it iced if it’s warm out. The Pop-Star Mocha is on this list too, in case the waffle felt like commitment.

  • Fondues, ice creams, marshmallow dippers

    The pudding section. Good for kids, good for grown-ups who admit they like the kids’ pudding section. Fondues are best shared.

Prices are on the menu in the shop. We keep them off the website so they’re always right.

The room

It’s small, warm, and the kitchen is right there.

Bunting, fairy lights, chalkboards. A long wooden counter where the chocolate gets made in the morning and the coffee gets pulled all day. Two-hundred metres from Clitheroe Castle, on the high street, with a window that always has something on it: usually a milkshake, sometimes a fondue, occasionally a small queue.

The chocolate part I’ve got. The owner part is newer.

I’ve been the manager here for the better part of four years, so the day-to-day is in my hands already — the chocolate, the kitchen, the regulars, the school-holiday rush. Buying the place is the new bit. I’m learning the rest as I go and I’m honest about that.
